The Japanese Honeysuckle is a climbing vine that we have trained into bonsai tree form. It blooms in the spring and summer with fragrant creamy white flowers. It benefits from pruning and thinning. The cultivar name honors George Rogers Hall (1820-1899), an American medical doctor living in Japan who founded a garden in Yokohama.

This small tree which is native to tropical America has very small feathery, finely divided leaflets on compound leaves and has a soft medium green color. The slightly rough stems are a rich chocolate brown or grey having sharp short multiple thorns. The small, yellow, puff-like flowers are very fragrant and appear in clusters in late winter and also sporadically after each new flush of growth, providing nearly year round bloom. The persistent fruits have a glossy coat and contain seeds which are cherished by birds and other wildlife. Great for indoors.

What is Shohin bonsai? "Shohin" is the Japanese word for "a tiny thing." The basic rules of Shohin bonsai suggest that it should not be higher than approximately 25cm (that's 10 inches) when measured from the rim of the pot to the top of the tree. Most experts believe that you must be able to hold the Shohin bonsai in one hand and it must express the beauty of a large tree in miniature. The exact measure of the height of the tree is then less important. Also known as Mexicana Ficus. Elongated, light green leaves have a striking resemblance to the popular Weeping Willow tree. This tree does particularly well indoors in low, moderate or higher lighting conditions.
